“My wife and I took four of Stephen’s Mexico City Art and Food Tours in February 2025 and had a wonderful time!
The tours that we took were each in different neighborhoods of Mexico City and Stephen helped us appreciate their distinct character, history, and architecture. He knew where the best art galleries were hidden, and often arranged for the owners to show us around. We greatly appreciated Stephen’s insights into the art we saw, and his enthusiasm and love for the city. We look forward to taking other tours with him in the future!”

With the second highest number of museums in the world, surpassed only by Paris, Mexico City is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. While world-renowned institutions like the Museo Frida Kahlo and the Palacio de Bellas Artes draw countless visitors, the city is also home to numerous lesser-known but equally remarkable art museums. These hidden gems showcase everything from colonial masterpieces to cutting-edge modern works. Visiting these lesser-touted institutions provide an intimate and enriching exploration of Mexico City's rich artistic heritage that often go unnoticed by most tourists.
Experience a diverse collection of contemporary art by top Mexican artists and internationally acclaimed creators showcased in world-class art galleries, and meet gallerists to gain insight into their mission and the exhibitions on display. Between six and ten galleries with be included in each 4-hour walking tour, depending on the exhibition schedule of each.
Venturing out on your own, art galleries in Mexico City may be:
hard to find; closed because they are setting up for a new exhibition; open but you have to ring an obscure doorbell to be let in: open but they had already taken down an exhibition that was not yet scheduled to be taken down.
Having a guide who has visited these galleries many times makes for a much easier time of it.

As one of the world’s largest cities, where nearly seven centuries of tradition blend together, Mexico City has rightfully earned its reputation as one of the globe’s most thrilling culinary destinations. Whether your palate favors gourmet or casual fare, or a blend of both, you'll find exceptional dining experiences in CDMX. The city's food scene is rapidly gaining international acclaim. In Mexico City, two food worlds exist side by side: the restaurants such as taquerías and cantinas and the streets with sidewalk grills and market stalls.
Wear comfortable shoes and come prepared to indulge in local flavors and savor delectable dishes during our culinary journey.

STEPHEN C. WAGNER

WHERE TO STAY
SFAN recommends finding accommodations in the Roma Norte or Condesa neighborhoods where many Americans live and stay. AirBNB has a large selection, from traditional Mexican homes & apartments to modern condos. Kitchens and washer/dryers often make these places feel more like home.
There are plenty of boutique hotels and larger hotels to choose from in the Roma Norte and Condesa that will offer more safety to your stay. And staff can help out with your questions and make suggestions.
TRANSPORTATION
SFAN suggests that you fly into MEX/AICM Mexico City International Airport. An alternative to major US airlines, Volaris airlines is Mexico's budget airline much like Southwest airlines, and offers affordable airfare from a select number of US cities. Transportation from the airport to the Condesa or Roma Norte via an Uber usually runs around $35 and takes 30 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. Note that taxis tend to be a target for thieves looking for wealthy tourists, so Ubers are safer to use.
Transportation around Mexico City is very affordable. An Uber can run $2 to $10 within the city where the tours will be held. The Metro subway trains cost 3 cents per ride and the Metrobus buses cost 6 cents per ride.
Transportation to and from our meeting places is not included in the SFAN ART & FOOD TOURS.
Meeting places for each tour will be announced in registration confirmation emails.

SPEAKING SPANISH & SAFETY
The people of Mexico are warm and friendly, but many do not speak English. SFAN will supply you in advance with an easy-to-use Spanish language glossary of commonly used words, greetings, and phrases for you to study and refer to if needed.
Overall, Mexico City is safe. Most of the city core is policed well, much like Manhattan. In recent years, Mexico City's government has increased security patrols in most areas. Touring in groups allows for more safety. However, one should always be mindful of their surroundings and exercise caution at all times.
Mexico City is typically warm in February & March with high temperatures ranging from 70°F to 80°F.
It rarely rains during this time of year.
