WHY COLLECTORS BUY ART "A Candid Conversation with Collectors" Panel Discussion via Zoom - hear directly from an intimate panel of art collectors on what motivates, inspires, and drives each of them to seek out, engage with, purchase, and incorporate specific works into their homes, workspaces, and lives Brian Cullen: Attorney & Dicovery Consultant Matthew McKinley: Exhibition Curator, Art Installer moderated by Stephen C. An art collector goes beyond mere art acquisition. They care for it, research it, give it meaning, share it. Devoted collectors truly appreciate the value of art in their lives, and want to live with it and enjoy it. Art not only has monetary value to these collectors; it has emotional value that enhances their life and helps them create an environment where they live or work that pleases them. Although the art market is predominantly influenced by buyers aged 40 to 64, comprising 62% of all purchasers in 2019, there is a noteworthy annual increase of 6% in collectors under 40, elevating their presence to 19% in the same year.

He currently works as a discovery consultant. He is also on the board of ArtSpan SF Open Studios and has become an avid collector of local art. Brian says he stopped counting the pieces in his art collection when he reached 100. |
“When I bought my first artworks about twenty-five years ago, my had no idea that it would develop into a passion. I now collect work across many styles and media, and tend to gravitate towards works where artists have managed to execute a unique vision or inspiration. If there's a unifying theme to my collection it's that it's overwhelming local, the vast majority purchased either directly from the artists at open studios or through smaller local galleries, shops, and shows. Knowing the artists, seeing their growth, and helping support their endeavors enhances the collecting experience and the collection itself immeasurably.”

“My art collection is the tangible result of my admiration for creative expression, my desire to support those who choose to share their artistic gifts, my personal experience with aesthetic absorption and maximalist design tendencies! I am fortunate that my career and my community revolve around art. As such, my collection primarily includes Bay Area artists, some of whom I’ve met once during the purchase of their artwork and some I’ve known for years and have shown, sold, installed, curated and/or otherwise supported along the way. Sprinkled throughout the collection, a keen eye will notice my likeness in various mediums.”
