The Condesa has been a trendy part of the city since the early 20th century, when wealthy people began moving out of the downtown El Centro Historico looking for more space and more greenery. Many of the buildings that surround Parque Mexico & Parque Espana were built after the 1920's, and thus the area is rich in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne style.
In the core of the Condesa, there used to be a popular horse racing track, called the Hipódromo. Its shape, the classic oval, still defines the area where horses once pounded the turf. The center of the oval became the popular Parque Mexico, surrounded by Avenida de Mexico. And around that, presumably where ladies in hats and men with cigars and fists full of pesos for betting used to sit and watch the racing thoroughbreds, runs Avenida de Amsterdam.
Opened in 1927, Parque México stands as the cultural heart of the Condesa district. This expansive urban park is celebrated for its striking Art Deco architecture and beautiful landscaping.
The park is adorned with numerous fountains and ponds including a small lake that hosts geese and ducks, along with a fountain with an Art Deco clock tower in it's center. The park's most renowned feature is the Lindbergh Forum, with five monumental pillars surrounded by a pergola and an exapnisve plaza. The amphitheater is framed by a grand Art Deco fountain, depicting a woman gracefully balancing two water vessels.
The Condesa and Avenida de Amsterdam are an artist's delight, peppered with unique art venues including high-end galleries, pop-art galleries, alternative art galleries and eclectic shops exhibiting artwork.
Between five and eight galleries with be included in this 4-hour walking tour, depending on the exhibition schedule.
The neighborhood is still mostly residential, but you will find many chic shops, intriguing art galleries, flower stalls, cafes, restaurants, and bars, so you can’t go hungry or thirsty on chic Avenida de Amsterdam
