This wide, shady avenue features art nouveau mansions and art deco apartment buildings in a historic neighborhood that evolved in the 1920's around a now defunct oval race track built in the 1890's. The center of the oval became the popular Parque Mexico, surrounded by Avenida Mexico. And around that runs Avenida Amsterdam. Locals walk their dogs down the broad sidewalk in the middle of the boulevard and shoppers browse the many toney boutiques. Stylish sidewalk cafes, trendy bistros, and casual taquerias dot the area.
Avenida Amsterdam is a broad two-way street with a wide central pedestrian area called a camellón. This paved path, lined with plant beds, trees, and benches, invites people to sit, watch, read, or gaze at their phones. As we meander, the façade-gazing will be engaging and awe-inspiring. This charming street is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, offering a unique blend of culture, history, and modernity. With it's charming details, surprising variety, and vibrant colors, Avenida Amsterdam is a photographer’s delight.
We will start our walking tour at Parque Mexico, opened in 1927, at the heart of the Condesa district. This expansive urban park is celebrated for its striking Art Deco architecture and lush greenery. The park is adorned with numerous fountains and ponds, including a charming small lake that hosts ducks and swans. An Art Deco clock tower, complete with intricate ironwork and ringing bells, marks the passage of time. The park's most renowned feature is the Lindbergh Forum, which showcases five monumental pillars surrounded by a serpentine pergola and an impressive plaza. At its center, an amphitheater is framed by a grand fountain, depicting a woman gracefully balancing two water vessels.
Cafés, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, chocolatiers, and ice cream shops abound, making Avenida Amsterdam a hub of café society. We will make several stops for a tasty lunch, imbibe in refreshing beverages, nibble snacks, and indulge in ice cream & chocolate treats. Rest assured, you won’t go hungry or thirsty during this delightful stroll.
This tour includes a Mexican dish of your choice, a beverage of your choice, and a sweet treat of your choice. Other dishes may be purchased by attendees at any of the several local food stops that we will make during the visits to art galleries.
